Only certain climates and soils lend themselves well for truffle cultivation. In North America, the Mid-Atlantic States have proven to be the most reliable area, with ideal soil types and climatic conditions. Truffles have been produced from our trees in North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, and several more orchards in Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware are close to production.
Several soil types are acceptable. Generally soils in the US have to be amended with lime. Garland Truffles has pioneered the method to modify the soil in the most beneficial way to insure excellent growth and early production. Moisture throughout the year is essential. The orchard must have a source of clean water for irrigation. We recommend a variety of mulch materials to be used for moisture conservation, weed control, and soil aeration.
Good drainage is a must, as the trees cannot tolerate standing water.
